Healthy Habits To Adopt When You Don’t Have Access To A Gym
Being pulled out of routine can be very disconcerting. During the past week the Corona Virus scare has disrupted our routines and forced us to consider new ones. Although the health risks will pass, the measures that are being taken to keep us as safe as possible may be in place for another several weeks. So, it’s time to create some new routines to stay healthy and strong.
Never underestimate the power of walking (jogging, running). The weather is beautiful in South West Florida right now…a big reason why we’re here! If you get out early in the morning or late in the afternoon, the sun isn’t hot and there’s usually a nice breeze.
For health benefits you want to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps every day. That’s approximately 5 miles. Walking improves your posture, strengthens your back, leg and glute muscles and gives you lots of time to hold your core tight. You also get fresh air and sunshine which are great mood boosters. The heat of the air as well as the heat you generate from walking will also help keep any virus at bay!
There are numerous gadgets that will keep track of your steps. Smart watches and smart phones are equipped with step apps. There are also Fitbits and Garmin watches that are specifically made to measure your movement. You can also invest in a pedometer for about $5- $10 on Amazon. You may have any of these in that closet with all your old exercise equipment. Time to get it out again!
Email or call your friends and start the walking challenge. The more people you involve, the more accountable to the task you become. It’s a great way to be involved as a group and practice Social Distancing at the same time.
Walking Challenge: Get 10,000- 20,000 steps in every day. Set the number of steps for each day of the week. Then you can see who can see who can complete the steps the fastest. Email or text your numbers to each other each day. It’s fun, competitive and keeps you connected during this time of Social Distancing.
#2 Shut off the News!
Staying informed is important. But watching the news all day long becomes very stressful. Stress compromises your immune system drastically. When there is a virus spreading, you want your immune system as strong and healthy as possible.
Get your news fix in the morning or evening, enough to be informed. Then shut it off or watch a good movie. Maybe something that makes you laugh for great stress relief.
I hope everyone stays safe. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine!
All the best,
